Grallator is considered an ichnogenus. This means its class is determined by the footprints it left behind. Grallators include a variety of three-toed prints created by theropod dinosaurs. These tracks have been found between the early Triassic Period (~250 million years ago) and the early Cretaceous Period (~130 million years ago). These specimens are found in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and China. Usually ranging between 4 to 10 inches in length, it is nearly impossible to determine what exact species left the prints.

This specimen is the negative imprint of a track left behind on the banks of the Portland Formation. When the dinosaur stepped into the mud, it left its mark to be recorded in history. The imprint was quickly covered with silt or other material when the water rose, beginning the fossilization process. The track has been stained to better show the details of the print. The stain can be easily removed with warm water and soap.
