Technically, these are fluorapatite crystals intergrown with a matrix of hematite, magnetite, and quartz. This is the reason behind the weight of the specimen. Cerro de Mercado contains numerous veins containing gemmy, lemon yellow to greenish fluorapatite crystals. Specimens have been collected at the iron mines for decades but are becoming increasingly tougher to come by.
