Scolecite is a tectosilicate mineral, officially classifying it as a zeolite. This means it is related to other minerals such as stilbite. It was first described in 1813 and gets its name from the Greek word σκώληξ, meaning worm. This mineral is often found in sprays of needle-like crystals which are extremely fragile and difficult to transport without damage. Typically, this mineral is found colorless or white, but has been discovered in pink, red, and green depending on various impurities. Scolecite is found associated with other minerals such as calcite, quartz, stilbite, and apophyllite.
