This specimen is a perfect example of smoky quartz with some slight internal zoning. As you can see in the photos, there is a lot of depth within the crystals, especially the longest point. This specimen displays nicely and will serve as a small, but mighty, piece to any collection.
Smoky Quartz is a brown/gray/yellow variety of quartz that contains aluminum impurities that are naturally irradiated by the Earth. This is the same process that occurs to form amethyst, but with a different metal. Its name is derived from the German word "quarz" meaning hard. Quartz can form in trigonal or hexagonal crystal systems depending on the temperature during formation. Crystallized quartz ideally forms a six-sided crystal terminating with six-sided pyramids. During the Victorian Period, smoky quartz found in Ireland was used in the jewelry worn by those in mourning.
Smoky Quartz assists in dispelling fear. It lifts depression by bringing an emotional calm and a sense of level-headedness.
