Jet is the lowest ranking form of coal known as lignite. It is a derivative from wood that has formed under extreme changes in pressure. While the name jet comes directly from English, it comes from the French word jaiet. White jet is exclusive black or brown in color, it may contain small inclusions of pyrite. The saying "Jet-Black" began with reference to this material. There are two forms of jet, hard and soft. Hard jet is formed from the compression of carbon atoms and saltwater while soft jet is the compression of carbon with fresh water. Both these types of jet score the same on the Mohs scale. Soft jet may just crack more easily under changes in temperature.
