This species of crab comes from the Mahajanga Province of Madagascar. Mahajanga is a port city on the north coast. They are found in layers of very soft rock which is removed to expose the extravagant details of the body and legs. These crustaceans lived during the Pliocene Epoch, roughly 2.5-5.3 million years ago, and fewer are seen available each year as they are swept up by private collectors.
A fossilized crab of this nature is sure to take your fossil collection to the next level. As you can see from the photos, many details of this specimen remain intact. 9/10 legs are still visible with only the rear, swimming legs being significantly damaged. The remaining walking legs have all of their segments, excluding the most distal portion. Both pincers are present, with one missing the larger portion of that claw. The true beauty of this specimen is contained in the abdomen of the crab. Please watch the video to see the natural beauty of this fossil.
