Quartz can form in trigonal or hexagonal crystal systems depending on the temperature during formation. Crystallized quartz ideally forms a six-sided crystal terminating with six-sided pyramids. The majority of quartz forms from molten magma. The largest quartz crystal ever found was located near Itapore, Goiaz, Brazil. It measured over 23 feet long and weighed 88,000 pounds.
