Chrysanthemum stone, also known as "flower stone", is a mineral formation that took place millions of years ago. While it is often confused with vegetative fossils, it is actually just a crystalized formation consisting of the chemical formula Al2SiO5. This is a common mineral of people to collect for its strange formation. The mineral is typically dark-gray or black in color allowing for a stark contrast sure to catch your eye. Each "petal" of the flower is actually a rhombohedral crystal. Around 200 million years ago, Liuyang, China, the area where this mineral is found, was completely underwater. As the water receded over time, the strontium sulfate left behind began to form crystals.
