Polychrome Jasper, often referred to as desert jasper, was found by accident. An expedition searching for the highly prized ocean jasper in 2008 lead to the discovery of polychrome jasper. The word jasper is derived from the Greek word "iaspi", meaning spotting stone. Jasper is classified as quartz that contains up to 20% inclusions or foreign materials. The current deposits of polychrome jasper have to be dug by hand due to the difficult terrain that surrounds them. The colors of this mineral are caused by iron.
